Ikuinen kaupunki Roma (7) The everlasting city Rome

Ikuinen kaupunki Rooma - vihdoinkin!
The everlasting city Rome - at last !

First about our B&B room, which we had received already from home on internet. Our room was a part of a bigger department, with two bedroom/bathroom units, with joint kitchen and drawing room.
The place was very good located, a walking distance to most of the attractions, on a very quiet little ally, we could pic up a breakfast from a larger list and breakfast was very good and was served to our room, and the room and bathroom unit was realtively afordable considered the location. The other room unit was also occupied, but we never heard any disturbing voices or noise.  We did not use or needed the kitchen or the joint drawing room, because our own room was spacious and had good furniture.  This B&B room suited us very well, it was rebuilt, clean and nice.  However, the house was very old without lift, and the stareway was also old and stonestairs were worn slanted and smooth, so I was a little bit scared to slip on them.   That is why the room does not suit for people with bad leggs or otherwise paraplegic people, but to others I can recommend it!  Though the area with its houses and streets were really old, and everything outside looked timeworn, it was clean and tidy on all streets, no carbage, empty bottles or cans etc. any were! You can see it yourself in the photos below.
"Meidän" pikkukatumme.  "In and out. Bed and Breakfast" se oli!
Our tiny street and door.  "In and out.  Bed and Breakfast"  it is!

Vinoiksi kuluneet kiviraput.   Stonestairs warn slanted.

Ikkuna sisäpihalle porraskäytävässä.   A window to a little atrium in the stairwell.

Näkymä yli kadun, vastapäiseen taloon.  Romanttiset ikkunaluukut ja kukkalaatikot ikkunoilla ja katolla.
A view over to the house on the opposite side.  Romantic shutters and planters on windows and on the top of the roof.

Näillä kujilla sopisi hyvin lauleskella vanhaa iskelmää "Poika varjoiselta kujalta" ("Guaglione2 italiaksi).
On these small allies one could well sing the old italian melodie "Giaglione"

Meidän "maamerkkimme"  Piazza Navona ja yksi mukavista paikoista istahtaa iltaisinkin, katsomaan elämää, ihmisiä, nauttimaan lasi viiniä, olutta tai vaikkapa italialaista jäätelöä ennen asuntoon palaamista.  Vain parin minuutin kävely asunnolta!
Our "landmark" was Piazza Navona, one of thouse nice places on evenings, too, to sit down and look at people or to enjoy a glass of wine, beer or italian icecream before taking back to the B&B.  Only a few minutes from our room!

On Piazza Navona there was always live, days and nights, and two fine fontains were there was nice to sit by.

Tuon tempun olisin mielelläni halunnut osata....
That trick i hope i could myselv....

The Piazza on the evening and  "A dying swan" ???  No, not quite.  But Italians love weddings and brides, so I think it was a bride who wished to get a little dramatic photos. Of some reason the groom did not show him there, at least we could not see one, maybe he was in some of the bars around while the bride took care of drama!  Or maybe it was a new way of Vogue to present weddingdresses.

As a the opposite to the "swan" in the pic before, some big and strong:  This fine statue of elefant and in its neighbourhood the great  temple of Pantheon.

Kupolin keskellä on ainoa valolähden, pyöreä aukko, 9 m läpimitaltaan, josta saattaa sataa suoraan sisään.
This is Pantheon, the best prserved building from the emperor time, from aprox. year 120.  Of the  dome one can only see a part outside.  Its height  inside is  43,3 meters, the same as its diameter. In the center of the dome is the only lightsource, a round hole, diameter 9 meters, and it can rain straight in through it.

Rome wouldn't be Rome without river Tiber (Fiume Tevere) which runs through the city.  Under  a  picture  of Tiber, Castel Sant'Angelo and Bridge of Sant'Angelo.

A tourist attraction which is difficult to go by without noticing it, is this grand white building on Piazza Venezia.  It was erected after the first world war in honour for all the fallen soldiers and named after the united Italiy's first king as the monument of Vittorio Emmanuel. Among other things in the building there is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and an eternal flame.  The building is also known as "Altar of the Fatherland" (Altare della Patria) eller "II Vittoriano":  The local people have also fabricated a playful nickname "Weddingcake", because the white marmor building in fact can give one association of  multi-layered kake with cream!

In front of this building we also took our sightseeing buss, which had an open second floor.  We have on our trips learned that it is pays in so big cities.  First it is good to make a roundtrip with buss, and then come back on one's own time and pace to those objects, which interest you most.

Eräs toinen hyvin tunnettu paikka Roomassa on "Espanjalaiset portaat".
One another very well known place in Rome is "The Spanish Steps".  I wandered what has made them so spanish.  The stairs were first called with name Scalinata delle Trinità dei Monti, after the church above them on the hill.  The church was anfortunately under refit and wrapped in when we were there, as the picture shows.  The square where the fountain on the front lies is Piazza di Spagna and the fountain  has got its form from a flood on Tiber under year 1598, when a story tells about a boat which was carried out to right this spot.  "The Spanish Steps"  got probably at the end the now used name after a Spanish ambassador who lived here by. These steps did not impress me so much than the steps in Paris, in front of Sacre Cour church, and I wonder how this place has got its fame!

Otetaanpa pieni tauko näillä rappusilla, ja lisää Roomaa ensi kerralla!  Toivottavasti melko pian!
Now let's have a pause on these steps, and more from of Rome next time!  hopefully rather soon!
