Matkamuisto - A souvenir

Hei taas!

Hi again!  A little snack between the travel posts, but although concerning the trip.  I told in the former post that daughter and I bought us a pillowcase each, on the Brooklyn fleamarket.  Here is now mine, seaking its place at home.  I picked up mine because of the colours which I thought would match to our home.

Tässä arkisohvalla....
Here on the every day couch...

...tai "paremman puolen" nojatuolissa?
... or in the "better side's" armchair?

Luulen, että viimeinen on parempi!  Vai?
I think the last one is best! Or?

Syksy on tullut - Autumn is here!

Peruuttamattomasti!

Irrevocably!
The autumn has come, and although september and the first half of october were very "nice" - not so rainy, warm and mostly sunny, so it seems now that before us there comes colder days and the frost nights will be more normal than an exception! But we must be grateful for the beautiful and colourful time we had!
Here a little autumnpotpourri from my own garden.

Hyvää syksyä kaikille!
Have a nice autumn !

USA 2, New York

Brooklyn og MoMa -  Brooklyn and MoMa
Nähtävien paikkojen listallamme olivat Brooklynin silta ja Brooklynin alue melko korkealla ja olimme varanneet siellä kuluvan lähes kokonaisen päivän. Otimme ensin metron keskustasta Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall'in asemalle.

Brooklyn was rather high on our list of places we hoped to see and we had to be there at least half a day.  We took first the subway  from mid Manhattan to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall station.  From there we walked slowly over the bridge, about 1830 meters lang.  It took its time to see the bridge, its construction, admiring the seem all the ways and take pictures.  The bridge is one of three which connect Manhattan and Brooklyn together.  The two others are Manhattan bridge and Williamsburg bridge.  Brooklyn bridge is the oldest of them, it was finished at 1883 after 14 years work, and 27 workers were kild during the construction.

Näköaloja Manhattanille päin Brooklynin sillalta:  Views to Manhattan from Brooklyn Bridge:

Brooklyn is like an other town compared with Manhattan.  Here are the same iron balconies and firestairs, like in Manhattan on the older houses.  But otherwise one felt it was a more "easy and eary" feeling here, this not only because of the lower buildings, but also because of style and atmosphere.  It is like New York compared with San Francisco, found we out afterwards, it is  more hippie feeling here, too, just like in San Francisco!

Kirpputori pikkukadun varrella.
A fleemarket on a small street.

Oli hassua löytää kotoisia nimiä täältä, Bergen  kadun asema!
It was rare and funny to find homely names here, Bergen Street Subway station!

Paikallinen pieni kirkko, olisi melkein voinut olla Norjasta.
A local little church, could almost been from Norway!

Brooklynista löytyy valtavasti erityyppisiä rakennuksia, erivärisiä ja erilaisin seinämateriaalein päällystettyjä!
Alemmassa kuvassa on paikallinen baari piiloutunut vanhojen lankkujen taa, kun taas lähes kulman takana on seinä päällystetty kauniilla kaakelilaatoilla!
In Brooklyn you kan find a lot of different type of buildings, different colours and coverd with different materials.  On the picture beneath has one bar hide itself behind old plankets, while behind the next corner a whole wall is covered with beautiful tiles

In Williamsburg  shore there were a bigger fleetmarket.  We used a little time there too, and both daughter and me buyd a pillowcase.  There were much that we would have liked to buy, but we knew we would not have enough place in our suitcases, a pity!  We also visited in neighbourhood were local hand craft designers had a market - many beautiful and interessant pieces.

On the East river shore, below the fleetmarket, you could admire the Manhattan skyline, and the beautiful weather had locked many people to spare their time on the lawn there.

Kun pikkuhiljaa palailimme kohden Brooklynin siltaa etsimme tätä hyvin anonyymia ovea, jonka taakse kätkeytyi meidän hieman erikoinen illallispaikkamme, nimeltään....
When we at last began to go backwards to against Brooklyn Bridge, we were in the same time looking for this very anonymous door, behind it was our a little special dinner place, with name....
....Delaneyn Grilliravintola Briskettown
....Delaneys Barbecue Briskettown

Sorry to say that my pictures about the food portiones did not succeed, but the food was very succesfull! the way to make and serve it are a little speciel, the meat serves on a sheet of paper and all the accompaniments in small papercups.  You can only book a table at a special period, and after that meat will be served as long as there is some.  They do not prepare it again for every new guest, but it is smoked for severeal hours in advance and only a certain quantity, so when it is finish then it is finish! The place is very popular, but propably not yet very far known.  I can though recommend it, a very tasteful and special experience!  You can read more about the place f.ex. in the link above.

"Pitkä päivä Brooklynissä", mutta lisään tähän loppuun ilman vielä kuvia käynnistämme MoMa:ssa eli New Yorkin modernin taiteen museossa (Museum of Modern Art).  Se sijaitsee  taas Manhattanilla,  vain pari korttelia pohjoisempaan Rockefeller Centeristä, osoite on numero 11, West 53. Street. Komea rakennus ja paljon upeaa nykytaidetta!
"A long day in Brooklyn", but I will put here still some pictures of our visit to MoMa, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Manhattan, only a few blocks north from the Rockefeller Center, in adress:
nr 11, West 53th Street.  A bold building and much fine modern art!

Joitakin tunnettujen taiteilijoiden tunnettuja töitä:
Some of the wellknown paintings of wellknown artists:

Puinen kulmikas mies ja tuntemattomasta materiaalista laadittu tuoli,  nämä ovat ainakin minulle tuntemattomien tekijöiden tuntemattomia töitä, en muistanut panna muistiin nimiä museossakaan.
A wooden agular man and a chair made of anknown stoff,  these are at least to me anknown works of anknown artists, and did not note the names in the museum either.

Although there were lot of things in the museum, I had to have some looks from windows, too.
Beneath: The left picture could have been a modern artwork, but in fact  the wall in the museum is opened on a way that shows  a staircase in a fine way.  On the right a seem from museum to its atrium, which planned with small reservoires, fontains, small bridges and a lot of green around.

Näkymä kadulle: vanhoja kauniita rakennuksia yhtäällä, ja toisaalla jälleen nykyaika  muistuttaa itsestään korkeine rakennuksineen.
A seen to the street:  one side old beautiful buildings and on the other side again modern time reminds of itself with the high houses.

Vieläkö jaksatte jatkaa tällä matkalla?  Lisää on tulossa....paljon!
Do you still manage to hang on this trip.  There is more to come....a lot!

Terveisin, bye bye,

USA 1. New York

(Kuva paluumatkalta, San Franciscosta New Yorkiin, Newarkin kentälle)
(Photo taken on the return fly from San Francisco to Newark)

Lento New Yorkiin sujui melko nopeasti emmekä tunteneet suuremmasti vuorokausieroakaan.

Hello friends!
At last I have began with pictures from our USA-trip.  I suppose it will be a picture story of several parts!  I try though to put in pictures without all too long stories, but a little systematic following our trip calender and putting tgether pictures from one theam or place.
We started our trip on the last week og August and used 2 weeks on it, dealed in about 3 parts between NYC, S.F. and the end on H.W. 1, Los Angeles.  We did not although stay overnight in L.A. but drove at last to a little town with name Ocean Side between L.A. and San Diego.
The flight to NYC was fine, the  and the same with the flight to S.F. 4 days later.  Worse was the trip back to home, deals for short of sleep on the last night i S.F., lang trip, and I cannot sleep on plane.  I had a bad jetlag afterwards, it took a whole week to come back in a norwegian rhythm!  But I could nicely used a loger time for this trip, so much to see in NYC and S.F.,  would liked to have seen more of the wonderful nature, Yosemithe park, National park, and why not Grand Canyon, but the days we had were not enough to everything.  Maybe next time...

Hienoa:  New York juhlisti ilmapalloin tuloamme! Tulimme junalla Newarkin lentokentältä Cityn Pen Station'ille, ja koska hotellimme aivan sijaitsi aivan lähistöllä, niin päätimme kävellä lopun matkaa.  Tuntui tyhmältä ottaa taksia niin lyhyelle matkalle.  Samalla saimme jo ensimmäisen pienen silmäyksen kaupungista.
Fine:  NYC celebrated our arrival with balloons!  We took train from Newark to City and Pen Station, and because our hotell were in the neighbourhood,  we decided  to walk the rest of the way taking the first look of City.

We went soon out again and found nearby a small but very nice Italian restaurant.  We celebrated our first night in the Big Apple with a drink also called Big Apple!  The food was very nice and as a dessert we got a piece of a very nice Tiramisu cake.

We walken on and stopped in a little park,  Madisson Square Park, and listedned when a man sat and spilled piano there to people who sat there, walked through the park, and maybe also to these small qute things which run here and there looking for food.  They were very tame and propably are often fed by people here, in spite of signs that forbid it.

In the Park there were famous and popular a hamburgerbar , Shake Shack.  When we walked by we saw lot of people sitting there and a loooong queue from the street waiting their turn.  An other night much later on we saw there as much people and two queues on both sites of the hatches.  We did not bear to wait  in the queue!

Puistoa vastapäätä, 5.:nen Avenuen ja Itäisen 23. kadun kulmassa, osui silmiin yllättäen jotakin suomalaista - no Marimekkohan se siinä!  Iloisen värikkäät uudet kankaat ikkunassa.  Pistäydyimme toki sisäänkin juttelemaan ja katsastamaan tyylikästä liikettä.
Vis a vis the Park, in corner of 5th Avenue and E. 23rd street we suddenly saw something Finnish - yes, it's Marimekko there.  They had cheerful colourful new fabrics in the window.  Of course we had to go inside too, to have a chat and look at the fine shop.

When you in the same parkcorner look back to the left you'll see the special landmark of Broadway, a triangel formed Flatiron Building, where among others a produser of ecological Origins cosmetics and M&T Bank are holding to.

Vanhanaikaisia rakennuksia New Yorkille niin tyypillisine palotikkaineen rakennusten ulkosivuilla. Tulee ihan mieleen vanhat Hitchkockin jännitysfilmit!
When you turn your head a little back again, your eyes meet this sight.  Oldish buildings with their, to NYC so typical firestairs outside the buildings. They make me to think about old Hitchkock's thrillers!

Eräs New Yorkin näkyvimmistä tunnuksista:  Keltaiset taksit,  joka paikassa, koko ajan, kadun täydeltä!
One of the best New York signs:  The yellow caps, every place, all the time, the streets full of them!
So I had to have with me, too, but some smaller.....

Eräs New Yorkin tunnetuista paikoista on "Times Square" , joka on saanut nimensä sanomalehden New York Times'in muutettua päämajansa tänne v. 1904.  Tämä on ainoa paikka New Yorkissa, missä vuokralaisten tulee asentaa neonmainoksensa rakennusten ulkoseiniin.  Aukio on New Yorkin "ikoni" ja kaupallinen solmukohta keskellä Manhattania.  Valitettavasti aukiolla oli katutöitä ristiin rastiin, joten hyviä kuvakulmia oli vaikea löytää. Tässä kuitenkin muutamia kuvia.
One of the famous places in NYC, is Times Square, which have got its name after that the newspaper New York Times moved its headquarters here in 1904.  This is also the only place where the tenants are imposed to assemble their neonreclams out on  the buildingwalls.  The place is New York's icon and a commercial junction in the middle of  Manhattan.  Unfortunately there were construction works all over the place and it was very difficult to find good ancles for photos.  Here som pictures, anyway.

The down part of the photo over:  There walked strange creatures on the street, no, there was thou Mickey the Mouse.  Probably the others were also old frieds of all children. They wer surely walking reclams of films or theaters of the place.  On the left side of the photo below:  The Christ- statue of Rio de Janeiro - no, I have not put here a wrong picture.  The picture of the statue just popped before my eyes as big as a wall on the Times Square. All the reclams are big here, as almost everything is in America!

I knew that houses in NYC are higher than the next highest  Posthouse in Oslo, (where i used to work earlier, on the top floor), but I did't thought I could get pain in my neck after looking up all the time to  highs and taking photos of these "monsters".  - Here som of the first days' snaps of these high colossus of different shapes!

Tämä saanee riittää tältä kerralta. Seuraavalla kerralla mm. Brooklynistä..  Kiitos seurasta tänne saaka!
This may  be is enough for the first time.  Next  among other things about Brooklyn. Thanks for your company so long!
