USA 7 -San Francisco 3, plus plus

Hei taas!
Hello again!  Our last exciting attraction in S.A. was the Alcatraz prison island, a prison where no one has succeed to escape from, not alive anyway.

Alcatraz is  a rather small (500m / 85 000 m2) and rocky island (40 m over sea.), right in front of San Francisco. It is well visible from S.F. City with a distance of 2,4 km from the city shore. The seawater around the island is very cold and the stream very strong and devious, which also has disabled many escape attends. There  on the island has  been a  fortification and military prison from 1868 and about from 1933 to 1963 federal prison with  high security.

Korkeimpana saarella nousee Alcatrazin majakka, joka on vanhin Amerikan länsirannikon majakoista.
The highest building on the island,  is Alcatraz lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse on USA's westcoast.

Tähän rantautuu lautta San Franciscosta.
Tämän rakennuksen (uudempi sellirakennus?) yläpuolella kalliolla näkyy pääsellirakennus.
Here comes the ferry from San Francisco.
Above this one ( a newer cellbuilding?) on the rock you can see the main cellbuilding.

"Asuntoja" kolmessa kerroksessa.   "Apartments" on three floors.

Yhden miehen "asunto".     One man's "accommodation".

Here had officers and guardians parties and other celebrations before.  Now have ivies, vines and birds taken over the houseruin.  A fire destroied the house under occupation  by the American Indians 1969-71.

Vankien terapian ja ajanvietteen tuloksia.
Results of the prisoner's terapi and pasttime.

In the night, June 1962, three prisoners succeeded  to escape from their cell by enlargin a ventilationcanal in their cell with a spoon.  They escaped then through the canals, to the ceiling, and in the end the a water, where they used a raft build with a raincoat.  They were never seen after that and one suppose the strong and cold stream took they to the sea

Muutamia pahimmista, vasemmalta:  Alphonso "Arpinaama" Capone,  George "Konekivääri" Kelly,
Arhur "Tohtori' Barker ja Alvin "Kammottava Karpis" Karpavicz.
Some of the worst from left:  Alphonso "Scarface" Capone,  George " Machine Gun" Kelly, Arthur "Doc" Barker and Alvin "Creepy Karpis" Karpavicz.

Kaikkien kaltereiden, betonin, raudan ja raunioiden  keskelle on kuitenkin eksynyt hieman kauneutta ja herkkyyttä!
Among all gratings, concrete, iron and ruins, in there still have migrate  some beauty and sensitivity!

So near - and so far away!  The prisoners could here people's laugh and music from the city, which seemed to be so near, however not approachable!

Suunnistimme vielä ensin pohjoista kohden Napa Valley'in viinialuetta ennen kuin aioimme lähteä seuraamaan \High Way 1:kköstä etelään Los Angelesiin. Ajoimme ensin yli Golden Gate sillan, koska kaupungin idempänä oleva silta oli sattumalta korjauksen takia suljettu, ja poikkesimme matkalla pieneen vanhaan kalastajakaupunkiin nimeltä Sausalito, missä nautimme kevyen lounaan.

Our time in S.F. began to be full, our son had finished his jobb and studies here, så we had the time to hire a car and move on.  We took north to Napa Valley's winedistrict first, before we would return and follow Highway 1 to Los Angeles.  We drove so again over Golden Gate, because the bridge more east was temporarily closed this weekend because of repairing works, and then we stopped in the little and  old fishingtown, Sausalito, where we took a light lunsch.

Viinialueella seurasivat viiniviljelykset toinen toisiaan kilometrikaupalla.  Välillä vilahtivat ohi suuret "mansionit" eli viinitilallisten upeat kartanot, joista useimmat tarjosivat maistiaisia turisteille ja muillekin viineistä kiinnostuneille.
On the winedistrict large wineyards followed one after another and mile after mile.  Now and then one could see big mansions, the winefarmers gorgeous houses, which the most efford winetasting to tourists and other
interested.

Me yövyimme Napa'n keskustassa, mukavassa edullisessa hotellissa, mutta olimme päättäneet nauttia monen ruokalajin illallisen viiniesittelyineen  ravintolassa, nimeltä "La Toque", muutaman kilometrin päässä.
We had received rooms in a nice affordable hotel in the center, but had decided to enjoy a dinner of several courses with belonging wine presentations in a restaurant,  "La Toque" a few kilometers away. It has got very positive mentions and have one Michelin-star, too.  The dinner was just wonderful and tasty, every course and wine was presented separaly, service to table and also otherwise was superb - and in our mind could earned several than one Michelin-star!

Valitettavasti en muistanut ottaa paikasta kuin yhden kuvan, ulkona juuri astuessamme taksiin, hotelliin palatessamme.
It was a pity, I did not remember to take any photos but one, outside, just cliving in the taxi when we were returning to out hotel.

The next morning we returned to south again, first to San Francisco City, and then drove through Merced where our son lived during the summer, then through Palo Alto, where he jobbed, and through Mountain View, which I was interested to see both  for the nice name and because that in both the last named areas there lives propably persons who are following my blog.   Unfortunately no one of these were interested to take any contact.  We had very little time, but it had been though nice to get to known!  From these areas only some pix here under.  Next time pictures from Monterey surroundings and Higway 1 to L.A..

Merced Park'ista, lähellä Merced järveä:
From Merced Park, near Lake Merced:
Viehättävä pientalo alue mäellä viheriöineen, keskellä mäkeä ryhmä korkeita kivitaloja, joissa vuokra-asuntoja mm. opiskelijoille.
A nice area with lower villas and some high houses in a group, where among others the students hired apartments.

Palo Alto'sta,From Palo Alto:
Yllättäen keskellä muunlaista kasvillisuutta ilmestyi eteemme komea palmukatu (Palm Drive) Stanfordin yliopiston alueella, Palo Altossa.     Alla kuva idylliseltä ja erittäin vihreältä omakotialueelta, missä myös poikamme työskenteli firmassa, jonka täkäläinen konttori oli sijoitettu tällaiseen 2-3-kerroksiseen omakotitaloon vihreän puutarhan ympärömänä.
All of sudden among other type of flora and trees, there were a fine palm street (Palm Drive)  ahead us, near by the Stanford University, in Palo Alto.  Below a picture from an idyllic and very green house area, where also our son worked in a firm, which had placed its local office in that type of house of 2-3 floors, surrounded by a nice garden.

We began to get short of time, because we had planned to take to Monterey area before night, where we had received hotelrooms.  That's why we did not stop in Mountain View either.  We only drove around looking around in the center town.  A pity because it looked very nice with its low buildings and many blooming trees and flower decorations on the street sides.  Even the town hall had sweet light rosa colour!

Ja sitten Valtatie yhdelle ja etelään päin... jatkoa seuraa!
And then to Highway 1 and direction south... will be continued!
Heippa,  Bye,Bye!
