...ja korkeallakin ne ovat! Ne ihanan punaiset komeat syksyn pihlajanmarjat tietenkin!

...and high are they hanging, too! Those wonderful red and grand autumn's rowan berries, of course!

Alkulauseet ovat kettutarinasta, en muista saiko se koskaan marjojaan, vai löysikö jotain parempaa syötävää lopulta. Eikö pihlajista muuten myös puhuta "pyhinä puina" jossakin historiassa tai ehkä Kalevalassa. Ainakin muistan lukeneeni , että niillä on ollut jotenkin erikoinen asema puiden joukossa. Eikä mikään ihme, minusta ainakin pihlajat vähän erikoisia ja erittäin kauniita, sekä kukkiessaan, mutta myös silloin kun ne saavat punaiset marjansa. Pidän myös kovasti niiden lehtien muodosta.

Tänä vuonna ne ainakin täällä Norjassa sekä kukkivat, että nyt kantavat satoa aivan uskomattoman paljon. Niistähän on joku sanontakin, tai parikin, kumpi sitten mahtaneekaan pitää paikkansa: "Ei pihlaja jaksa kahta taakkaa kantaa, marjojaan ja lunta talvella" eli tietääkö se, että tulee vähäluminen talvi. Vai onko niin että "luonto varjelee omiaan talvella" ja on tuottanut paljon ravintoa linnuille kylmän, kovan talven varalta.

Olen tässä ottanut muutamia oksia kotiin ja pannut ne vanhaan keramiikkamaljakkoon, jonka tein kerran eräällä keramiikkakurssilla. Koristelu siihen on tehty painaen eläviä lehtiä ja marjaoksia pehmeään saveen. Painanteet on sen jälkeen väritetty ja lasitettu. Maljakko on poltettu, mutta vain sisäpuoli on kokonaan lasitettu vesitiiviiksi. Tein maljakon juuri tähän "pihlajien aikaan" vuodesta.

The first words were from a history of Fox, who hoped to get some rowan berries, but found out to the end that they were nothing to him, I suppose he finally found something else better to eat. Any way I think there, in the Finnish history, or was it in the Finnish national epos, Kalevala, that rowan trees are named as some kind of holly trees?

I think they have had a special place among all trees in peoples mind. And it is no wonder, they are very very beautiful, I think at least, both when they have flowers and when the red berries have come. I also like very much their the blade forms.

This year rowan trees had lots and lots of flowers in the beginning of this summer, and now a lot of berries. There is some old dictions like: "The rowan trees can not bear two burdens, its own berries and the snow on winter", meaning that there will not be much snow in the coming winter. Or they say, too, that Mother Nature has prepared itself for a hard and cold winter making enough to eat for its birds. Which one of these meanings could be right, I do not know!

Here I have taken some twigs home and put them to a pottery vase I did once on a ceramic course. The decoration on it, is made with pressing living blades and berries on it, and the marks were then coloured and glazed. The clayvase is burnt, but totally glazed waterproof only inside. I made the vase just in this "rowanberry time" of the year!

Tämän seinäkoristeen tein monta vuotta sitten muovailusavesta. Se on maalattu vesivärein ja lakattu päältä. Joku lehden kärki on jo muutoissa katkennutkin, mutta minusta se on ollut aika hauska seinän piristäjä. Lisäksi se on melkein kuin piilokuva...

This wall decoration I did many years ago of hobby clay. It is painted with water colours, andwith lac vernish afterwards. Some blade point has been cut of in home removes, but I have always liked it myself, and I think is a refreshing decoration. Besides, it is a kind of "seek and find" picture (what is the real name of that kind of pictures in English???)...

Jos pidät likööristä, niin oletko koskaan maistanut pihlajanmarjalikööriä? Se on todella hyvää ja upean kullankeltaista väriltään. Me valmistimme sellaista monta vuotta sitten ja muistelen, että ohje oli melko yksinkertainen. Jos jotakuta kiinnostaa, niin voin yrittää muistella ohjetta ja kirjoittaa sen tänne blogini myöhemmin. Pihlajanmarjahyytelön taas varmaan useimmat tuntevat. Pitäisikin tänä syksynä valmistaa vähän sitä ja tätä!

Lopuksi kuva viikonlopun tunturimatkaltamme tien varresta, vain yksi niistä monen monista pihlajista, jotka taipuivat marjataakkansa alla, niin paljon ja niin suuria ovat marjat tänä vuonna! Tunturimatkasta myöhemmin lisää blogissani. Hyvää viikonloppua kaikille!

If you like liquers, have you ever tasted a rowan berry liquer. It is really good and have a wonderful golden yellow colour. It is easy to make it, so if you are interested, I could try to remember and write it up here in my blogg. And rowan berry jelly is well known to almost everybody, I think. Maybe one should try to make one thing and an other this autumn!?

And to the end a picture from our weekend tour to the mountains ("fjells"), one of the many many rowan trees (mountain ashes) which were bending under their berry burdens, which are so many and so big this year.
